Do you know someone with back surgery?

Over the years we've had many situations where the concept of back surgery as it relates to a patient who has had back surgery previously are they able to have chiropractic care? We've had situations where a patient has told us “Well I’ve have had back surgery so I can't ever go to a chiropractor, my doctor told me since I had back surgery I could never go to a chiropractor.” Or they just assumed that and I think that's something that we need to address. The reality is that we've taken care of hundreds of patients with back surgery. I think three or four of my first patients this morning have had at least one back surgery. So having back surgery does not mean that you cannot receive chiropractic care. For a lot of these people even though they've had back surgery and maybe it corrected the fire shooting down their leg or whatever was necessary in their case; they still might have chronic pain that chiropractic can offer them great relief. So you know there's different kinds of back surgery there's microdiscectomies, there's fusions, there's laminectomies, there's Hemi laminectomies, there's back surgery where there's actually hardware put in and where there's plates and screws. We have many patients where maybe they have a plate on the front of their neck. They might have a plate on the front of two vertebra screwed together because they had to have that fused for whatever reason. But the reality is that above and below that area it creates a lot of stress because each one of these joints is designed to move a specific amount and in different areas of your spine. Your spine is able to handle rotation. Some areas have more flexion and extension so if that is fused it might create stress between the shoulder blades, it might create stress at the upper cervical spine or at the base of the skull. For many patients we've been able to go in and adjust around the areas of surgery and provide these people with sometimes complete resolution of pain, sometimes just 75% other patients it provides the only conservative management, non-drug approach that offers them relief for that condition. So the point here is that if you have had back surgery or if a loved one, a friend or someone you know has had back surgery that does not mean they cannot receive chiropractic care.

That is one reason why in our office we do a thorough complete orthopedic/neurologic examination taking x-rays so we can see what kind of surgery has been done, where's the hardware, where is it attached and what's going on. In some cases we may need to have communication with the surgeon to know what's going on. All those things are worked into the decision-making process of making sure that we know exactly how to take care of that specific situation. We hate to hear of people that are living with chronic pain or suffering that we could help and it's such a great, simple and drug-free approach to help someone live a better life with more hope and more exciting future. I hope this information you're able to use for yourself or share with someone you love so that we can all build a healthier community!
