Are You Following Your Prescription?

I'd like to briefly discuss a topic that can be sometimes confusing, maybe even a little controversial as it relates to chiropractic and that is why we recommend multiple visits. I can understand to a degree where that confusion comes from and that's why I'd like to discuss it. So an analogy that I might like to use in order to help us understand this concept a little bit better is let's take for example if we got a bad bacterial infection and we go to the doctor and we're certain that it's a bacterial infection. The doctor says that you need an antibiotic so the doctor is going to prescribe that antibiotic and you're going to take that pill but the doctors not just going to give you one pill. I mean if an antibody kills the bacteria why don't we just take one pill? That pill goes into our body, it kills what needs to be killed and we're better but we all realize that it doesn't work like that. That first prescription that we take or first pill we take kills a percentage of the bacteria and that we need to continue to take that prescription to its completion to make sure we kill off that entire strain in a lot of ways that's exactly what's happening with chiropractic. At times we can think that there's a bone out of place that the chiropractor puts the bone back in place and that it should just stay there and that fixes the problem but I think when we get caught up in this out of place and in place kind of concept that's where we create the confusion when we see a model of the spine in the office. We see the bones but we forget about all the ligaments and tendons and muscles and fascia that are holding this whole network together so when your spine is injured and it heals in wrong and is typically in most cases they're like that for many years before they even enter into our office it's going to take some rehabilitation or some training to reestablish that so each adjustment is building on the one before. Just like each time you take your prescription it's helping to prepare for the next one until all the strains of bacteria that are offending the body or interfering are eliminated so each adjustment is building on the one before and making more and more correction. I sometimes like to think of it as well as like breaking a bad habit. For some people it may be changing things around in your kitchen and moving where you keep your pots and pans or maybe in the garage you moved where you keep certain tools to reorganize things a little bit. But then you find yourself going back to the old drawer looking for the pots and pans drawer and you're like “man I know I changed where these are at why do I keep going over there?” Because you have a habit, you've neurologically in your brain and in your nervous system ingrained this pathway that says the pots and pans are over there and until you create a new pathway and you do it enough times and remember that oh that's right I moved them over to this drawer. You keep catching yourself going back to that same spot and that's what happens in your spine. These misalignments are bad functional motor patterns in your spine that have been in there for many years and we have to retrain your spine so the repetition of adjustments is a clinical sound concept. It's supported by research and our theory is this: We don't want to see you anymore visits than necessary but we also don't want to see you any less visits than you need, so our goal is your success. Our goal was getting your relief as quickly as possible, hoping you feel better then helping you function better then help you live better so I hope this is helpful for you have a wonderful day and thanks again for choosing our office.
