A common musculoskeletal issue, carpal tunnel syndrome affects a large portion of the population. In your wrist, the median nerve runs through a small opening known as the carpal tunnel. Anything which causes pressure to be placed on the median nerve results in the symptoms which we recognize as carpal tunnel syndrome. Pressure on the nerve often results from swelling and inflammation within the carpal tunnel. Several factors can cause swelling including injury, repetitive motion, rheumatoid arthritis, pregnancy, diabetes, and hypothyroidism. When the nerve is under pressure, it results in numbness, tingling weakness, and/or pain in the fingers and hand. This nerve does not affect the pinky finger, so usually, symptoms are only felt in the thumb, pointer finger, middle finger, and ring finger.
Carpal tunnel symptoms can be debilitating, as they affect our hands which we use for almost every activity. At Mills Chiropractic Center, our skilled chiropractors provide patients with natural, non-invasive relief from Carpal Tunnel in Kittanning, PA.
At Mills Chiropractic Center, we offer a three-step approach to carpal tunnel treatment with low-level laser therapy, Kinesio taping, and flexion distraction. These therapies provide your wrist area with the support it needs to accelerate healing, reduce pain and inflammation, and prevent future carpal tunnel occurrences.
Low-Level Laser Therapy - Also known as cold laser therapy, this treatment applies a cold laser directly the affected area. Set to a particular light wave frequency, the laser stimulates soft tissues, promoting the cellular generation of a molecule called adenosine triphosphate (ATP). Your cells require ATP in order to repair damage at the cellular level.
Flexion Distraction - We use our flexion distraction bench to help patients remove pressure from the discs and nerves within the vertebrae. With flexion distraction, we are able to target a specific point to reduce inflammation, increase circulation, and reduce pressure on the nerves.
Kinesio Taping - Using a special tape and taping technique, our chiropractors use Kinesio taping to improve lymphatic flow and increase circulation, which not only reduces inflammation but also accelerates healing. The tape can also be used to stretch tight muscles or tighten overly stretched muscles.
The pain of carpal tunnel not only hurts, it keeps sufferers from enjoying and participating in their day to day lives. Imagine mixing a bowl of cookie dough, typing a report at work, or swinging a tennis racket without feeling that familiar twinge of carpal tunnel pain.
