Vibration Therapy

Vibration Therapy in Kittanning

Vibration therapy sounds a little new-age, but it is actually a scientifically proven technique that enhances bone health. The practice goes back as far as the 1800’s when Russian physician Gustav Zander created the first apparatus using weights and pulleys. Today, NASA relies on vibration therapy to help their astronauts maintain bone mass. At Mills Chiropractic Center in Kittanning, we provide vibration therapy to our patients as part of a comprehensive spinal health plan, but what is it?

Our Chiropractors Discuss Vibration Therapy

Vibration therapy is a form of passive exercise. In other words, it is something done to you that forces the muscles to contract and expand as opposed to you going for a walk or jog.

There are two basic forms of vibration therapy:

  • Whole-body
  • Localized

With whole-body treatments, you stand on vibration plates or lay on a specialized platform. Localized therapy allows the chiropractor to focus the vibration using a hand-held device and treat problem areas.

There are also two different movement styles, too. With lineal vibration, the machine creates an up and down movement while pivotal moves back and forth. Either way, vibrations go through your body causing muscles to contract and relax. Certain types of vibrations stimulate the production of osteoblasts, which increases bone mass.

Benefits of Vibration Therapy from Mills Chiropractic Center

Our Kittanning chiropractor has a number of goals in mind when prescribing vibration therapy for patients including:

  • Increasing bone density
  • Increasing muscle mass
  • Improving circulation
  • Reducing joint pain
  • Reducing chronic back pain
  • Alleviating stress
  • Boosting the metabolism

A 2011 study published in Clinical Rehabilitation shows that vibration therapy increases both bone mineral density and leg muscle strength. It is a practical choice to help prevent muscle soreness common for athletes, as well. If you are prone to specific sports injuries, vibration therapy may work to reduce your risk.

Is Vibration Therapy Right for Everyone?

It is up to the chiropractor to decide if vibration therapy is the right choice for your treatment strategy. We will evaluate not only your spinal condition but your overall health, as well, when making a decision.

Vibration therapy is not recommended for:

  • Women who are pregnant
  • Patients taking blood thinners
  • Anyone with advanced diabetes
  • People with heart disease

While there are some contraindications for this treatment type, there are some compelling reasons to consider it, too, which is why we offer it to our patients. It works well for treating chronic back pain and is a good option for people who have difficulty exercising for some reason. It is a common choice for people with Parkinson’s disease, for example, because it helps reduce tremors and builds muscle tone.
