Our Story

I am excited to share with you the story of how Mills Chiropractic Center came to be… The story begins in the fall of 1993. I was a freshman civil engineering student at the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown. I had chosen UPJ because I could pursue my main passion in life at that time, baseball, as well as studying engineering. I had just finished a long summer season of AAU baseball and was ready to start my college baseball career. Unfortunately, when I began pitching in our fall season I started having shoulder and arm problems. The best way I can describe it was that I had a "dead arm". I was trying to pitch but the velocity and movement on my pitches wasn't there. My coach decided that he would rest my arm. When the full spring season started I played third base and didn't pitch at all my freshman year. During this time I was following all the recommendations of the sports trainer and was not getting better. That summer I was playing baseball in the Indiana County League and a teammate of mine, Dr. Dave Hoff, a chiropractor, offered to evaluate my situation to see how he could help. After showing me that I had a subluxation, misalignment of my spine that was interfering with my nervous system, he gave me a series of adjustments and the life came back to my arm. It was in his office on that first visit that I felt the calling to be a chiropractor. I can remember to this day sitting in his office thinking "Wow this is amazing! I wish I would have picked this as my career". How amazing it would be to help people safely and naturally every day. What an awesome feeling that must be! It all made so much sense and it helped me so much. I was able to go on and pitch the last three years at UPJ.

For whatever reason when I was in the chiropractor's office that day it never occurred to me that I could change my major and become a chiropractor. I felt that I had one year of college already completed. I had decided to be an engineer and that was what I would do. It wasn't actually until after my junior year of college that being a chiropractor became a possibility to me. I was working in my summer internship for Penn Dot doing bridge inspection, working with a man named Jay and I told him "I wish I would have picked to be a chiropractor". He said "Then why don't you do it?" I said "It is too late now I have three years of college for civil engineering completed and I can't change now". This is where you can see God's hand in all of this. Here years earlier Jay had thought of being a chiropractor himself and had checked into all the schools and he knew what classes I would need. Jay told me "Mike it wouldn't be that difficult to change at this point. You have already been taking physics, chemistry, calculus and some free electives. All you will need is your biology classes and organic chemistry and you will be set." I checked into what he told me and he was exactly right. At this point, without my parent's knowledge. I called UPJ to make sure I could get the classes I needed. I contacted different chiropractic colleges and

got all my ducks in a row. I wanted to make sure that when I broke this news to my parents I knew exactly what I needed to do. I knew they were not going to be happy that I wanted to change my major at this point, but I also knew that my parents loved me and that they always supported me. I just had to show them I had a plan and I was very passionate about this. Fortunately for me I had an aha moment where I realized that I was going to spend twice as many years working than I had been alive at this point and I needed to choose a career that I would love and be fulfilled by.

I had always had an interest in health and fitness due to my athletic background. My high school baseball coach Mr. Curren had instilled in me a love for lifting weights that I still have to this day. So when I heard the philosophy and science of chiropractic it was the perfect fit for me. Chiropractic gave me a way to combine my interest in health with a natural common sense way of providing real healthcare while making a living and a difference in the world. This wasn't just a home run for me this was a grand slam!

So I sat down with my parents and shared my new plans with them to be a chiropractor. After they recovered from a little initial shock and after a bit of a heated discussion they realized I had done my homework, I was passionate about being a chiropractor. Then they did as they always had and they gave me their 100% support.

In October of 1997, I moved to Davenport, IA and became a student at Palmer College of Chiropractic. It was at Palmer were I truly got the big idea of chiropractic as B.J. Palmer would call it and I committed my life to serving humanity through chiropractic. Learning the philosophy, science and art of chiropractic gave me the ability to see through the thick fog of misinformation about health and see a smooth path leading straight to a healthier and better life. In 2000 I moved to Brooklyn, MI to complete my preceptorship at Plentz Chiropractic Clinic, one of the largest Family Wellness Chiropractic offices in the country. This enabled me to take all the knowledge I learned at Chiropractic school and developed a systematic procedure to deliver this amazing service to my patients.

On April 16, 2001 Mills Chiropractic Center was opened. Our goal was very simple; help people live a better life through better health by providing exceptional chiropractic care in a positive family friendly environment. What has allowed us to enjoy such great success is that it has always been about serving people. That is what we do, help people and we have never lost that focus. We believe the service we provide will help everyone. Whether you are looking for help with a specific condition or a way to improve your families' health and stay well, we can help. Everyone from children to adults would be better off with a health and wellness coach and a natural, effective system to be well.

What sets our office apart and makes us our area's trusted leader in chiropractic and wellness are three factors:

1)                          The care we provide and the expertise of Dr. Mills. Our procedures and techniques have proven over the years to achieve amazing results. Our System of chiropractic care is unique and has been developed from our experience with thousands of patients. Our care works to restore your normal spinal function by correcting a specific condition in the spine called the vertebral subluxations complex. We start with a detailed consultation, followed by a thorough examination and specific x-rays design to reveal the true interference to your health potential. We apply our proven chiropractic adjusting techniques that are tailored to each persons specific needs combined with our corrective spinal rehabilitation protocol to achieve amazing results. Our system is helping people just like you every day. You can learn more about our Doctors and their training on our "Meet the Doctor" page.

2)                          The knowledge you will receive. We believe that people want to make informed health decisions. For this reason we invest in teaching and informing our practice members the keys to a healthy life so they have the knowledge to make better choices for their family and have a healthier life. This is provided through regular education on each visit, handouts in office, seminars in office, multimedia as well as the internet and social networking.

3)                          The environment we have created. Our goal is to provide an environment that is welcoming, child friendly and inspiring. Our goal is that by being in our office you grasp a bigger vision for your families' health and wellness.  Research show that the environment we are in plays a major roll in our health therefore we have created an environment that brings hope, shows love and demonstrates trust to our practice members.

Since 2005, Dr. Mills has been mentoring and coaching chiropractors to help them provide exceptional chiropractic care and serve more people. Dr. Mills has expanded his impact on our region by establishing four additional chiropractic offices in Western Pennsylvania and transitioned their ownership to the operating doctors. In 2009, Dr. Mills completed his post graduate certificate through Life West Chiropractic College as a Certified Chiropractic Wellness Practioner. This gives him the unique knowledge and skill to act as a wellness doctor and lifestyle coach to our practice members.  This advanced training and expertise is what allows us to be our areas leader in chiropractic and wellness care.  He has recently published his first case study about chiropractic care and how it helped resolve a severe case of constipation.  Click to read it https://millschiropracticcom.chiromatrixbase.com/clients/7259/documents/Casr_Study_Severe_Constipation_Resolution.pdf

We know that choosing a doctor is a very important decision and we want you to know who we are and what we are about. I hope that this information is helpful to you. Trust is a major factor in making this choose and I want you to know that you have my personal guarantee that we will always put your best interest first and provide a platform for you to make educated and informed decisions.  I look forward to meeting you in person.
