One of the most common reasons I see for peopleresisting to make healthy lifestyle choices is their belief that they have togive up all the things they love to get healthy. With this belief system it is no wander mostpeople struggle to make lasting change. It is human nature not to want to give up the things we have grown toenjoy. This is exactly why when I amcoaching people to achieve their health goals we never start by taking thingsaway. No one likes feeling deprived. Feeling deprived is stressful to our systems,its discouraging and prevents lasting results. So dont do it. So what is theanswer? The answer is simple. Always start by adding the good, notsubtracting the bad. Wouldnt is beeasier to start by adding a salad before your favorite (but not so healthy)meal than to tell yourself youre going to eliminate your favorite meal for therest of your life? Start by adding thegood. Add a glass of water, an apple, ora salad to your day. Add fifteen minutes of walking, ten jumping jacks or tenminutes of quiet meditation to start your day. Do it for thirty days then add somethingnew. What you will find is that as youcontinue to add healthy choices into your day, unhealthy choices will naturallysubtract themselves without you ever having to feel deprived or consciouslyhaving to give them up. So picksomething small and add it your life today! There is a time for eliminatingtoxic lifestyle choices, but it must be done at the right time or it will neverlast.
